Things That Trash Our Ocean

Keeping trash out of our ocean.

It’s quite a challenge to keep our ocean free of trash. Did you know that about 80% of trash in our ocean originates onshore? Trash in the ocean compromises not only the health of wildlife, but humans too. It also causes navigation hazards for boaters and shipping and transportation vessels. Some trash stays out there for a very long time.

Things like…

  • Cigarette ButtsOcean Trash
  • Styrofoam Buoys
  • Aluminum Cans
  • Plastic 6-pack holders
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Monofilament Fishing Line
  • Mylar Balloons, Fishing Gear & Plastic Bags

Things you can do to help keep our ocean trash free …

  • Never discard items into the marine environment.
  • Dispose of trash and fishing gear in it’s proper place.
  • Keep cigarette butts off the streets and  beaches.
  • Cut the plastic rings on the 6 pack can holders.
  • Tie it down, secure it, stow it.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle.
  • Participate in coastal cleanup programs.

Our goal should be to be to protect and conserve our ocean and coastal waterways from the impacts of trash.
