Frequently Asked Questions on the Wi-Fi Service

General Information

  1. What do I need to get Newmarks WiFi service?
You need a laptop or handheld device with WIFI 802.11b and/or 802.11g wireless capability. Your current device may already have built-in capability. If not, you can purchase a WIFI 802.11b and/or 802.11g wireless networking card or antenna for most laptops from an electronics retailers. Your wireless network card documentation will have specific instructions on how to make this change. You will need an Internet-ready browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape) from any operating system
  2. Do I need to install any unique software to connect to the Newmarks WiFi network?
The only software you will need is the software driver for your WIFI 802.11b wireless network card and an Internet-ready web browser.
  3. Can I connect using a Palm or Pocket PC handheld device to the Newmarks network?
Yes, provided your Palm or Pocket PC handheld device (that support WIFI 802.11b wireless technology) utilizes a standard Internet-ready browser.
  4. What method of payment can be used to purchase time?
We accept all major credit cards.
  5. How is time deducted from a subscription?
Subscriptions are deducted in continuous blocks of time. The subscription starts at log on and ends at the end of that actual time period. You cannot use time purchased intermittently (i.e. stopping and starting at intervals). You can log on as many times as you want until the subscription expires.
Example: If a customer purchases 1 day (24-hours) and they log on at 10:00 a.m. on January 01, their subscription will end at 10:00 a.m. on January 02.
  6. Is my time subscription transferable?
No. Only one user can be on the account. See subscription Terms of Use for details.
  7. Can I access AOL and other Internet Service Providers (ISP) with Newmarks High-Speed Internet?
Once you get logged on you can browse any site, including AOL's home page.
  8. What is the name of the outgoing mail server to use when I am online with Newmarks' High Speed Internet?
Unfortunately we don't provide an outgoing mail server for use with our internet access. Your personal ISP may allow you access through them if you use SMTP authentication. You should contact them for more information.

Technical Issues

  1. Worked fine yesterday but not today. What happened?
The most import thing to consider when this problem occurs is if anything has changed since the last time you logged onto the network: installed new software, ran Norton Utilities or other system maintenance software, switched to a dialup connection, moved to a different HotSpot location. Even rebooting the computer can change your default setting and affect your connection. Becoming familiar with your computer's setting will help you trouble shoot this problem when it arises. Tech support can also help you quickly diagnose and correct the problem.
  2. Can't locate a signal at Newmarks or HotSpot (or picking up a different signal).
You may also not be close enough to the antenna or have a strong enough signal. Try moving to a different location.
  3. Have a good signal but cannot connect to Internet.
This means your computer is not correctly connected with our network. Begin by restarting your computer, opening your Internet browser and manually typing in a non-Newmarks website, like CNN.com or NBA.com. You cannot set the Newmarks WiFi login screen as your home page. The login will only work once you have connected to the Internet. Our network should redirect you to the Newmarks' Hot Spot login page.
  4. Username or password not working.
Check your password with customer service if necessary. Also review the security settings in Internet Explorer.
  5. Antenna height. Why don't you raise them up higher to improve line of sight?
The antennas are set at a height to give you the most coverage and signal strength and are in compliance with local ordinances. If we raised the antenna we could overshoot the yachts that are docked close to the facility.

Billing Issues

  1. What is the difference between your 1-month subscription and a monthly subscription?
Our monthly rate (Automatic Renewal Subscription) is available to all valid credit card subscribers. This rate will be billed automatically each month. See price plan page for details.
  2. How do I cancel my automatic renewal subscription?
You must contact the Office by phone or email to cancel auto-renew prior to your monthly subscription date.
